From the Potteries to Parliament: Putting a face to the digital divide.

Dec 9
A memorable moment for us at Wavemaker Stoke; We had the distinct honour of representing our team at the House Of Lords in Westminster for the launch of a pivotal new report by FutureDotNow. As a charity dedicated to uniting organisations under one voice, FutureDotNow is tackling one of the most pressing quiet crises of our time: digital inclusion.

We at Wavemaker are proud to be part of this community that is making a real difference with digital inclusion.

Bringing Data To Life

To bring the data to life, the report introduces six archetypes built from thousands of real-world data points. These personas represent three individuals who are digitally confident and three who are not. By putting a "face" to the statistics, the report illustrates the often invisible costs of being left behind in a paperless world.

Poverty Premium

One of the most striking revelations was the financial penalty of digital exclusion. Those lacking in digital confidence can end up paying approximately £1,400 more annually. Why? Because they lack the skills or confidence to: compare and switch providers for insurance or utilities, access “online only” discounts and banking rewards, or even navigate a competitive digital marketplace.

Validation, The Wavemaker Way

Walking through the halls of Westminster, we at Wavemaker felt a profound sense of validation. The themes being discussed at the highest levels of government - essential digital skills and a “people first approach” are the very pillars we advocate for every day in Stoke-on-Trent.

We spent the afternoon mingling with leaders from Virgin Money, Crown Commercial Service, and Sonnet (the social value team behind the report). It was encouraging to see that while we are working at the "hyper-local" level, we are part of a massive national movement.

Our DigitAll pathways aren’t just a "nice to have" - they are exactly what this report calls for. Our strategy of moving into the heart of communities to establish local digital hubs, led by DigitAll Champions, provides the human connection required to turn digital fear into digital fluency.

Looking Ahead

This report is not a conclusion; it is the beginning of a larger conversation with the Government and key stakeholders. At Wavemaker, we are excited to be part of the next steps, ensuring that these high-level discussions translate into actionable change for people in our community. The digital divide is fixable, but it requires all of us. We are eager to keep this momentum going. If you are passionate about digital inclusion or represent an organisation looking to make a social impact, we want to hear from you. Let’s work together to ensure no one is left behind in the digital age. Everyone deserves education.
