Next Steps, Big Leaps

Apr 15
Today was one of those days that reminds us exactly why we do what we do.

We were back working with the Next Steps programme, run through Stoke City Council - a brilliant initiative that supports young care leavers in the city and connects them with organisations like Wavemaker, giving them access to opportunities, skills training, and support that really matters.

This was the third session we’ve delivered as part of this partnership (including a full staff CPP session too), and once again, it was an absolute joy.

Relaxed vibes, real learning.

Let’s be honest - a full day of digital training could sound a bit heavy, but the atmosphere was great. Relaxed, open, and full of laughter. The young people jumped in with both feet, asking questions, sharing thoughts, and really getting involved. That kind of energy doesn’t happen by accident. It’s something we always aim for - to make these sessions feel welcoming, human, and never like school.
We were joined by some of the Next Steps staff team too, which really added to the mix. There’s something powerful about bringing together young adults and supportive professionals in a space like this, where learning happens naturally and confidence builds in real time.

What we covered

The session focused on helping young care leavers get ready for the world of work, and we explored some practical tools and techniques via our platform:

  • An introduction to our DigitAll platform for essential digital training
  • Interview techniques
  • CV writing
  • AI for creativity – which turned out to be a real highlight!

There was a wide range of digital experience and understanding in the room - especially when it came to AI - but everyone contributed. It was lovely to see moments of peer-to-peer support too, as attendees shared tips and helped each other out. Those moments of community and collaboration are where the magic happens.

A powerful gift

One of the standout parts of the day was being able to give each attendee a brand-new Chromebook, completely free via our programme. You could see it landed with real weight - not just as a device, but as a symbol of investment in them, their future, and their journey. The reactions were a mix of big smiles, quiet gratitude, and a real sense of “this is for me.

Why this matters

We love this work. It’s real. It makes an impact. It helps close the digital divide and opens doors that might have felt shut just a few weeks ago. And in a world where so many systems can feel overwhelming, it’s incredible to be part of something that gives people agency, skills, and hope.

Big thanks again to the Next Steps team and Stoke City Council
for making this happen. We’re proud to be part of this journey - and excited to see where these young people go next.
