From the moment we entered the Keele Innovation Centre - its soaring atrium and vibrant walls felt straight out of a Marvel set - we sensed the electric energy of possibility. Nic Stanway, our Caudwell Children team lead, introduced us to a group of young adults who had all recently left formal education and were eager to build their employability toolkit.
“It’s amazing to see how quickly these young people open up to new opportunities when given the right environment and tools.” - Nic Stanway, Caudwell Children
Dan and I began with simple introductions and icebreakers, setting a warm, inclusive tone. We encouraged everyone to share a bit about themselves - favourite apps, memorable online moments, even silly tech bloopers. This relaxed approach helped us forge rapport quickly, making the two-hour workshop feel less like a lecture and more like a collaborative conversation.
Key discussion points included:
- Our digital passion: Sharing tools and platforms we love, from intuitive project-management apps to creativity-boosting software.
- AI in everyday life: Demystifying machine learning and showing how AI can simplify routine tasks.
- Digital confidence gaps: Addressing common roadblocks - fear of making mistakes online, concerns about privacy, or simply not knowing where to start.
To bring these ideas to life, we introduced the group to DigitAll, our interactive platform designed to guide learners step by step. Each participant logged in, explored hands-on modules, and discovered how structured resources can demystify complex topics.
As part of Wavemaker’s commitment, every young adult received a brand-new laptop - portable, user-friendly, and theirs to keep. These devices aren’t just hardware; they symbolize opportunity, independence, and the start of a new chapter.
By the end of our session, we witnessed tangible shifts in energy and self-belief. Participants who arrived hesitant and reserved left animated, swapping tips on task management and brainstorming freelance ideas. Dan and I departed inspired - and already counting down the weeks until our next workshop.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this rewarding collaboration with Caudwell Children.
Together, we’re not only teaching digital skills - we’re unlocking potential.
